This self portrait (above) is from early in his career, around 1901, when he was about 20 years old. In style, color and handling of paint it seems related to late 19th century post-impressionists such as Vincent Van Gogh and Paul Cezanne. It suggests the intensity and confidence of a young, gifted artist.
This self portrait (above) is one of Picasso's last works, executed in the early 1970's. What makes it different in content and style from the earlier self portrait?
